MSM - Step Two: Overcoming Limiting Beliefs with a Growth Mindset

A three step approach:

Today, we're diving into Step 2 of the Mindfully Strong Method: Moving through Limiting Beliefs with a Growth Mindset.

In this step, we'll explore how to recognize, reframe, and respond to the limiting beliefs that may be holding us back from reaching our full potential.

I will be running 8 individuals through this process within my upcoming 1:1 program (The Mindfully Strong Method) with live coaching calls, worksheets, journal prompts and check-ins. The goal of this blog is to help you understand this work I do, give you a taste of the program itself, and also give you free resources to start this work on your own if coaching is currently not an option or not your style.

Okay.. Let's jump in!

Step 1: Reflect

The first step in overcoming limiting beliefs is to reflect on our thoughts, emotions, & experiences that create the belief itself. Think of heightened emotions as yellow flags signaling the presence of these beliefs. Ask yourself: Where do I currently feel stuck or limited in my life? What belief is behind this feeling? Can I pinpoint where this belief came from? What story is it telling me? And most importantly, is this belief true, helpful, and kind? By shining a light on these beliefs, we can begin to understand how they may be influencing our behavior and holding us back from growth.

Step 2: Change

Once we've identified our limiting beliefs, it's time to reframe them with a growth mindset. How can we change our perspective to see the challenge as an opportunity for growth? What silver linings or lessons can we find in this situation? It's important to ensure that our reframing is both kind and helpful, encouraging us to see setbacks as stepping stones rather than roadblocks.

Step 3: Improve

The final step is to improve our responses and actions in the face of limiting beliefs. Instead of giving in to doubt or fear, we can remind ourselves of the importance of this hardship for our personal growth. When we feel like quitting, we can push ourselves to go just a little further, holding on for a few more reps, minutes, or tries. We can redefine success and failure in terms of effort and progress rather than outcomes. And most importantly, we can change the inner dialogue by adopting process-focused mantras that reinforce our resilience and determination.

Here are some examples:

  • "Moving is winning"

  • "I learn by trying"

  • "Challenge and discomfort are part of the process"

  • "I can move through this, even with fear, doubt, or anxiety"

  • "It doesn't all happen in one day"

  • "Just do the work"

  • "Check the box and move on"

By sticking with an objective and problem-solving lens, rather than getting bogged down by what-ifs and subjective emotions, we can navigate through limiting beliefs with clarity and confidence.

So there you have it, folks! Three simple steps to overcome limiting beliefs and cultivate a growth mindset simplified. Remember, the journey to becoming Mindfully Strong is all about progress, not perfection. Keep reflecting, reframing, and responding with intention, and you'll be amazed at the transformation that unfolds.

These might not feel natural at first, honestly they might feel downright uncomfortable to start, but keep coming back to these practices and you are bound to see the reframe start to take root.
